Alamitos Intermediate School was recently recognized as a 2015-2016 AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction – the highest level of implementation of the college and career readiness program.  <\/p>\n

“Schools across the nation strive to attain this high level of AVID implementation because the program has proven so successful in helping students prepare for the rigor of college courses,” said Bob Harden, Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Board of Education member.<\/p>\n

Alamitos far exceeded the metrics required by the AVID Center to ensure that staff are trained in AVID philosophy and strategies and that WICOR (Writing to Learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading to Learn) strategies are routinely used.<\/p>\n

As a school site, Alamitos teachers use Socratic seminar to explore content with more complexity, Cornell Notes as a foundation for instruction, Essential Question to shape daily instruction and Critical Reading strategies to increase rigor in instruction school-wide.<\/p>\n

Alamitos also conducts school-wide training for all students in Focused Note Taking skills and provides school planners\/calendars to teach and enhance the district goal of "scholarly habits." <\/p>\n

Students and teachers are encouraged to wear college gear every Wednesday to help promote a culture of "college and career readiness"<\/p>\n

At Alamitos, 93 percent of teachers are AVID trained and 100 percent of teachers routinely use WICOR strategies.  Additionally, 77 percent of the school’s leadership team has an active role on the AVID site team.<\/p>\n

AVID is offered at the district’s seven high schools and 10 intermediate schools.  Doig Intermediate School and Santiago High School are National Demonstration Schools – a distinction held by very few schools across Orange County.        <\/p>\n
