More than 50 excited fourth and fifth grade students at Bryant Elementary School welcomed their family members to a special event last month to showcase their work in the after-school Heritage Language Enrichment Program. <\/p>\n

It was Bryant’s first year offering the six-week program which is designed to help all students including English learners develop their primary language literacy skills through instruction in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

More than 50 excited fourth and fifth grade students at Bryant Elementary School welcomed their family members to a special event last month to showcase their work in the after-school Heritage Language Enrichment Program. <\/p>\n

It was Bryant’s first year offering the six-week program which is designed to help all students including English learners develop their primary language literacy skills through instruction in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

For Tommy Nguyen, the program helped him develop literacy skills in a third language while Mackenzie Espinoza said she participated in the program to learn more about the language and culture of her family.<\/p>\n

The showcase was a culminating event and students proudly displayed self-portraits, photography, personal autobiography statements, family trees and poems written in English and Spanish.  Each project explored the idea of identity, family and community.<\/p>\n

Parent Maria Ayon said the program has helped her daughter communicate better at home. <\/p>\n

“She knows how to read and write in Spanish now,” Ayon said.<\/p>\n

Bryant is one of six elementary schools offering the program across Garden Grove Unified School District.  Next year, the district will open its first Dual Language Immersion Academy at Monroe Elementar.<\/p>\n

“The Board of Education is fully supportive of the district’s efforts to expand language enrichment programs because it honors the diverse cultures of our communities,” said district Board of Education Vice President Teri Rocco.  “Ultimately, when students graduate from high school, being fluent in two or three languages will give them a competitive edge as they pursue a wide range of careers in the 21st Century.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
