For the third year in a row, members of the H. Louis Lake Senior Center, 11300 Stanford Ave. in Garden Grove, showed off their skills during the annual Wii Bowling Tournament.

Coordinator of Activities Juan Medina said the seniors bowl three games, with the winners being determined by the total points of the three games.

“The team today is made up of volunteers who are regulars at the senior center,” Medina said. “We have had the Wii Bowling program for three years and last year we held a three-city tournament with Huntington Beach and Cypress.”

Cypress was the host for the tri-city event where they had more than 40 participants; 12 of the bowlers were from the H. Louis Lake Center.

Medina said they first had the Wii Bowling for the teens and then adopted it for the senior center, because the bowling is good for hand-eye coordination.

“We have done other games on the Wii machine but by far Wii Bowling is the favorite.”

The H. Louis Lake Senior Center offers Wii Bowling three days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for two hours each day.

“Most of the bowlers have gone out and purchased their own Wii machines for their homes so they can practice.”

Those participating in the Wii Bowling tournament this year were Dolores Lorenzen, Barbara Nurse, Arlene Sado, Karen Hostetter, Larry Gray and Ann Zanzi.

Asked what she liked about Wii Bowling, Zanzi said, “It’s wonderful – I love it – and I like winning and I’m good at this.”

Hostetter said she likes the competition, the fun and the friends she’s made. Asked if she’s good at the game, she said, “I’m so, so, “ but her teammates say, “She’s good.”

Sado also volunteers her time at Meredith on Chapman Avenue, which is a homebound facility, to teach them how to play Wii Bowling.

Even people who are in wheelschairs can play Wii Bowling because the game primarily uses the upper body and so those people are invited to participate at the H. Louis Lake Senior Center too.

The event was open to those 50 years and older, with top players being invited to participate against other senior centers.

Organizers said the tournament promotes enthusiastic competition, memory improvement, hand-eye coordination, and reaction time, to enhance the quality of life for seniors.

In addition to the tournament, the H. Louis Lake Senior Center offers a variety of opportunities for people who like to play cards or hear different presentations, free fitness programs to promote healthy aging for a person’s body and mind and they have exercise equipment just outside of the center for those wishing to use those machines.

Coming up is the “Wicked Witches Halloween Party and Dance,” Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to noon.

For information about the H. Louis Lake Senior Center, call 714-741-5253.

For dining room information, call 714-741-5250 between 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
