The Garden Grove Unified School District Adult Education High School Diploma Graduation Program held its annual graduation Thursday, June 13, at the Lincoln Education Center.

Forty-six men and women from the class of 2013 received high school diplomas this year. Twenty one were present during the evening to personally receive their diplomas; three received scholarship awards for "Over-all Academic Excellenc.” They were: Julio Cesar Quintern, Sean Tyler Dean and Minh-Trang Thuy Nguyen. Each received $250.

The school’s hope is that the graduate's will continue to higher education and judging by comments from individual students, that is what a lot of them plan to do and/or are currently working toward.

Students graduate at their own pace and receive their diplomas from the president of the Board of Education, Dr. George West, Ed. D.

This year, more than ever, the students kept echoing, “Stay in school and never give up…”

Each student was asked who was most instrumental in helping him or her achieve their goal of a high school diploma. Those accolades with heart-felt warmth went to their mothers, fathers, grandparents, girlfriends, boyfriends, sisters, brothers, best friends, a husband, a daughter, school staff members, teachers and the principal.

It's easy to see that the people who surround students are their biggest and best influence in this case.

Working to receive a GED is not as easy as perhaps a student who has stayed in high school and graduates while parents pay the bills and provide their food, clothing and shelter.

"Congratulations on your graduation from our adult education program; all of us are extremely proud of you and your accomplishment…" students were told.

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredits the Garden Grove Adult Schools. A diploma received through an adult school is equivalent to a diploma issued by any of the high schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District.

Students have the option of an independent learning center or independent study.

Vocational classes, which include computer training and cosmetology apprenticeship, are offered in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. There are also GED, ESL, Older Adult, Citizenship and Parenting classes, with most classes open entry/open exit.

Administrators, teachers, counselors, instructional aides and volunteers work as a team to encourage and support student academic and vocational success.

Students are given opportunities to help teachers on campus as volunteers. As an example, students in the high school diploma program help in the ESL classes and students in vocational classes are given opportunities to learn new skills to prepare for the workforce.
