BY TED APODACA: La Quinta High led early in the first set, but the Aztecs could not keep top-seeded Upland Christian Academy at bay as the Eagles eventually ended the Aztecs’ season with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 win in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 8 girls volleyball playoffs last week at La Quinta High.

The loss ended a seven-match win streak for the Aztecs that saw them finish the Garden Grove League race in second place. They also handed league champions Garden Grove their only league loss with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 win over the Argonauts.

They also won a first round playoff match in a three-set sweep.

“From where they started to how they ended was a remarkable run,” Head Coach David Tran said.

Tran said the players showed tenacity, willingness to learn and a team first attitude that turned the season around after starting league play with a 1-3 record. The Aztecs swept Fairmont Prep in three sets to win their playoff opener. Jeanine Nguyen had five kills to lead the Aztecs and setter Julie Sumalpong had 20 assists in the win.
