The Westminster Lions high school football team played its season opener against the crosstown rival Garden Grove High Argonauts on Friday night at Garden Grove High, and the Argonauts defeated the Lions by a score of 28-7 in the season opener to earn bragging rights this fall.
The Argonauts dominated the game with their running game and the Lions’ defense could not stop them in their tracks.
The Westminster Lions high school football team played its season opener against the crosstown rival Garden Grove High Argonauts on Friday night at Garden Grove High, and the Argonauts defeated the Lions by a score of 28-7 in the season opener to earn bragging rights this fall.
The Argonauts dominated the game with their running game and the Lions’ defense could not stop them in their tracks.
From beginning, the Lions were not playing their best. Their defense was not good at all as they gave up a lot of rushing yards. The Argonauts took advantage and moved the ball on the ground against the Lions’s offensive line.
The Argonauts end up with two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. On their first position the Argonauts capped of an 80-yard drive with a five-yard rushing touchdown to take the early lead 7-0. Then they finished their second scoring drive with a 37-yard rushing touchdown to make it 14-0 lead for the Argonauts.
The Argonauts added another rushing touchdown for five yards to add to the lead in the third quarter 21-0. The Lions would eventually get on the board from a rushing touchdown from three yards out to trail 21-7, but the Argonauts answered back with another rushing touchdown from 10 yards out to score their final points of the game and win it 28-7. The Lions’ offense did well but penalties hurt their scoring chances.
The Lions had a chance to tie the game with the end zone in their sites in the second quarter. The Lions completed a pass that would have been inside the 20 yard line but it was called back due to a holding penalty. The Lions also had a good drive in the third quarter but once again a penalty was called against them to move the ball farther back from the end zone.
The Lions will have to improve on both offense and defense next week.
“We just have to get better and I have faith in you to do just that,” said Coach Ted McMillen in a team meeting before a bus ride home. The Lions next game is against the Marina Vikings in front of their home audience at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Argonauts will take this momentum next week to try to win two consecutive games. Their next outing is on the road against the Woodbridge Warriors on Friday night. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
