The Garden Grove High Argonauts defeated the La Quinta Aztecs in extra innings 6-5 last week to end the season finale before the playoffs.

The play started out slow at first but then got more interesting as the game progresses. There was also some controversy in the game that almost changed the outcome of the game.

In the top of the eighth inning where the score was tied at five apiece, the Argonauts were up at bat with the bases loaded. Chris Williams hit a deep ball down centerfield that was caught for the out and one runner scored, or did he? The call on the field was no run and the Argonauts argued with the umpire for several minutes.

After the call was overturned the Argonauts had taken the lead with the score of 6-5. Then the Aztecs argued how the call was overturned, but the score stood and the top of the inning ended. The Aztecs tried to answer back but got three straight outs to lose the game.

In a different situation there was another questionable call in the seventh inning. The bases were loaded and the Argonauts were up to bat and there was a hit. Then there was a throw to home plate and the Argonauts took the lead, but the call was out by the umpire.

Once again the Argonauts argued, saying the Aztecs’ player did not tag the base so therefore there should be a run scored for the Argonauts. The umpire did not reverse the call and the game would go to extra innings. Beginning from the third inning on the two teams were trading runs in this nail-biting game.

The Argonauts started the scoring in the top of the third inning scoring two runs to make the score 2-0. The Aztecs would answer back and took the lead with four runs to make it a 4-2 lead. Then in the fifth inning the Argonauts would answer back to tie the game at 4-4.

The Argonauts would then score one more run in the sixth inning to take back the lead at 5-4 in the top of the inning. The Aztecs loaded up the bases in the bottom of the inning and got a walk to even the game again. The Argonauts had the chance to take the lead again in the seventh inning.

The Argonauts loaded up the bases but could not manage to score a run while the Aztecs’ defense made two key plays at the plate to keep it tied at 5-5. The Aztecs were also in scoring position in the bottom of the inning but the last batter got struck out and wasted a great opportunity.

The Argonauts have clinched a playoff berth, and the date and team have not yet been announced. The Argonauts finished second in the league just behind the Rancho Alamitos Vaqueros. The Argonauts were a win away from being league champions.
