BY TED APODACA: The Bolsa Grande High girls basketball team battled to the final seconds, but came up short as it was topped by Santa Ynez, 36-35, in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4A playoffs last week at Bolsa Grande High.

The Matadors trailed by just 1 point in the closing minute, but a missed free throw and a turnover on a fast-break attack were pivotal moments in keeping Bolsa Grande from advancing to the second round.

The Matadors trailed 34-29 with 2 minutes left when Brisa Santiago scored on a running layup off a lead pass on a fast break attack. Tiffany Ly made a steal on an inbounds pass and was fouled. She hit both free throws to cut the lead to 34-33, but that would be as close as the Matadors would get.

Bolsa Grande was able to make a defensive stop with 10.9 seconds left and trailing 36-35, but a traveling call gave the ball back to Santa Ynez and they were able to run the clock out.

Nhi Dinh led the Matadors with 10 points, while Ly had eight and Kiera Duran chipped in seven. Bolsa Grande finished third in the Garden Grove League at 6-4, one game behind co-champions La Quinta High and Garden Grove High.

Pacifica falters

The Pacifica High girls basketball team suffered a second half let down, and was eliminated from the CIF-SS Division 3AA playoffs, 52-49, by Oxnard, last week in Oxnard.

The Mariners led 34-27 at halftime, but could only muster 15 points in the second half. Mercedes Robles led the Mariners with 17 points, Sunshine Townson had 14 points and Isabella Robles added 12 points.

Pacifica was an at-large entry into the playoffs after finishing fourth in the Empire League, but with an 18-9 overall record.

Argonauts stifled

The Garden Grove High girls basketball team was held to just eight second half points as it was eliminated from the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs, 56-29, by Warren High last week at Garden Grove High.

Celise Moreno had 16 points to lead the Argonauts. Alondra Juarez had five points, but no other Argonaut was able to get more than two points.
