The Pacifica Mariners Varsity volleyball team won its first league game of the season against the Kennedy Fighting Irish last week.

The match started off tense, with the first set going back and forth before Pacifica began a four-point run that Kennedy could not recover from; the final score was 25-14.

The second set saw the Mariners down early before mounting a comeback after gaining points on several long rallies to end the set 25-17. The third set, and the first opportunity to end the match with a win, began with Kennedy powering up its offense to take a short-lived lead before Pacifica struck back with ace serves by senior captain Carly Watson and several kills by sophomore returner Erika Ray. The match ended with a score of 25-16, completing the three-set sweep of Kennedy.

After a tough pre-season, the Mariners are optimistic about league play.

“We played well,” Coach Tyler Hagstrom said after the game. “It’s nice to go out and win the league home opener to gain some momentum for league.”

The team has eight returning varsity members and nine graduating seniors, making the victory that much sweeter for such a large senior class.

“Our goal this year is to win league. It’s a tough league,” Hagstrom said. “Cypress is our main rival, but every team out there is going to be a challenge as well.”

Pacifica has been without a league championship in volleyball since 2006 and with the way this squad has began its run this year, it just may have the talent and drive to bring the winning tradition back to the Mariners.
