The No. 2 and No. 3 ranked football teams in CIF clashed in a non-league contest on Thursday, Sept. 26. Garden Grove High proved it deserved the higher ranking with a dominant 37-3 victory at Glover Field.

The Argonauts (4-0) always remained in control on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Angel Martinez, who went 9-for-13, tallied 205 yards in the air and two touchdowns. Martinez tossed both in the first quarter to help the Argonauts take a 14-3 lead. His first was a 58-yard pass to Austin Christian, who also delivered a stellar performance at cornerback with three interceptions. Martinez then tossed a 20-yard score to Reily Hoalton.

Katella (3-1) notched its only points in the opening quarter. Kicker Miguel Galindo booted a 30-yard field goal. In all, it committed four turnovers and failed to penetrate the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line during the final quarter.

In the second quarter, Bryan Quexel delivered a 5-yard run, which gave Garden Grove a 21-3 advantage at the halftime break. He later added a field goal in the third and Sione Mason, who also recovered a fumble, added a 4-yard score to push the deficit to 31-3.

Unfinished, the Argonauts dented the board one more time in the fourth. Martinez, who rushed for 30 yards, did the deed with a 5-yard run.

Garden Grove returns to action at University on Oct. 4. Katella will visit Santa Ana on the same day. Both contests start at 7 p.m.
