Garden Grove Unified School District’s Bolsa Grande High School recently received the Civic Learning Award of Merit, an important recognition co-sponsored by the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the California Chief Justice.

The award is given to schools that successfully offer research-based civic learning opportunities that are aligned to rigorous state standards and yield positive, measurable outcomes for students.  Bolsa Grande High School received the award for its Vietnamese American History course and the Vietnamese Student Association club.

“We are pleased that Bolsa Grande students demonstrate an excitement about the democratic process, civic engagement, and giving back to their community,” said Bob Harden, district Board of Education trustee.

Bolsa Grande’s Vietnamese American History course celebrates and empowers students to understand their local community and how the geographical, historical, and political background of the Vietnamese people have impacted Vietnamese culture in America today.

The school’s Vietnamese Student Association club functions as a community service organization and has been active for more than 25 years.  VSA club members have organized beach clean-ups, participated in Walks to End Alzheimer’s and supported the annual Tet Festival to honor the Vietnamese New Year.
