Chamber recognizes outstanding students

The Women’s Division of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce awarded scholarships to high school students from Garden Grove Unified School District during a special luncheon last week at the Garden Grove Elk’s Lodge held to honor outstanding students from the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

The Women’s Division of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce awarded scholarships to high school students from Garden Grove Unified School District during a special luncheon last week at the Garden Grove Elk’s Lodge held to honor outstanding students from the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

Scholarship recipients were: Emily Ngo, Bolsa, Grande High School; Nick Galvez, Garden Grove High School; Brittney Zaragoza, Hare High School; Brittney Trinh, La Quinta High School; Andres “Andy” Arcos, Los Amigos High School; Rebekah Bishop, Pacifica High School; Ruby Santos, Rancho Alamitos High School; and Julio Escobedo, Santiago High School.

“These motivated students are already exploring avenues to achieve their career goals and are well on their way to success in exciting fields,” said Linda Reed, district Board of Education trustee.  “We are grateful for the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce for their longstanding partnership and support of our students.”

Many of the scholarship recipients discovered their chosen career path after taking a related CTE pathway course at their high school.  Los Amigos student Andres Arcos took hospitality sector courses and participates in the school’s Culinary Club.  He has been accepted to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York where he plans to obtain dual degrees in Culinary Arts/Baking and Pastry Food Service and hopes to own his own restaurant in the future.

Pacifica’s Ruby Santos has taken multiple business classes at Pacifica and was accepted to Cal State Fullerton where she will major in business specializing in marketing and is the first in her family to attend a university.  Santiago High School’s Julio Escobedo has completed Automotive Technology I, II and III and Auto Performance I and II with straight A’s.  He will be attending Cypress College in the fall where he plans on continuing his automotive education and will be taking part in the T-ten automotive technician program sponsored and developed by Toyota.   Student Chanmonica “Monica” Men, who is taking health care pathway coursework at Garden Grove High School, was awarded a medical scholarship from the Visiting Angels and plans to attend California State University, Fullerton in the fall to become a registered nurse.
