Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) announced this week that the district will implement full-day transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at all district elementary schools beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

This marks the first time in district history that students will have the opportunity for full-day kindergarten.

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) announced this week that the district will implement full-day transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at all district elementary schools beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

This marks the first time in district history that students will have the opportunity for full-day kindergarten.

“The board is pleased that we now have the facilities and resources to offer full-day kindergarten classes,” said George West, district Board of Education president.  “Kindergarten students who receive a full day of classroom instruction show significant learning gains and are better prepared for first grade.”

Transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students will have the same start and dismissal time as their classmates in first through sixth grade to meet the needs of families who have multiple children attending the same school. Students will benefit from robust curriculum and enhanced hands-on exploration through science discovery, art and dramatic play.

Families can enroll their students for the full-day transitional kindergarten or kindergarten online at https://enroll.ggusd.us/. The online enrollment process is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean to serve the district’s diverse communities.

The district currently serves 3,355 students in its transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs. For the 2016-17 school year, children entering kindergarten must turn 5 on or before Sept.1, 2016. Children with birthdates from Sept. 2 through Dec. 2, 2011, are age eligible to enroll into transitional kindergarten.

Transitional kindergarten is provided at all district elementary schools and is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. Transitional kindergarten features a modified kindergarten curriculum with lessons that are age and developmentally appropriate. The daily instruction will include whole group and small group discussion and independent and hands-on learning. Participation in transitional kindergarten is voluntary. However, the district strongly encourages the enrollment of all eligible children because an additional year of learning will provide a stronger foundation for building academic success in school.

For the 2016-17 school year, children entering kindergarten must turn 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2016. A child may be admitted to transitional kindergarten only if the child’s birthday falls between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2010. There are no exceptions to the minimum age requirements for transitional kindergarten or kindergarten.

To complete the enrollment process, parents are requested to present one of the following documents to the school office as proof of the child’s birth date: certified copy of the birth record; statement of the local registrar/county recorder certifying the date of birth; baptism certificate duly attested; passport; immigration visa; or an affidavit from the parent, guardian or custodian of the minor when no other document is obtainable.
