But the Argonauts looked playoff ready last week as they went to Savanna and held the Orange League champion Rebels to no runs in a 2-0 victory in the playoff tune-up between the two Division 4 teams.
BY TED APODACA: After moving from Division 5 to Division 4, the Garden Grove High softball team has not drawn a lot of attention this season. They held off Santiago for the Garden Grove League title, going 10-0 versus the 8-2 Cavaliers.
But the Argonauts looked playoff ready last week as they went to Savanna and held the Orange League champion Rebels to no runs in a 2-0 victory in the playoff tune-up between the two Division 4 teams.
Savanna was ranked No. 4 in last week’s CIF-SS Division 4 poll, and has been ranked as high as No. 1 after reaching the CIF-SS finals last year, for the second season in a row. It could give the Argonauts an added boost of confidence and momentum.
“It was a good win to go into CIF,” Head Coach Jasen Sutter said.
Junior pitcher Olivia Candelas pitched a two-hit shutout, getting steady help from behind the circle.
“Our defense was really good today,” Sutter said.
Prior to the win over Savanna, Garden Grove also defeated Katella, the second place team in the Orange League, 7-1.
The Argonauts won the Garden Grove League, defeating La Quinta, 2-0, in the final league game of the season. But the tune-up game against Savanna gave the Argonauts a chance to face a high-caliber pitcher like ones they will face in the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs.
“They know it was a good win for the team,” Sutter said.
