GG hoops teams show promise

The Bolsa Grande boys basketball team kept Calvary Chapel at bay to defeat the Eagles, 57-41, at the Santa Ana/Garden Grove Classic Tournament last week at La Quinta High.

The win improved the Matadors’ overall record to 4-1.

Bolsa Grande was led by Sebastian Waked, who had 24 points. Noah Santiago added 10 points as seven players contributed points for the Matadors. Derick Tran had eight points and Ares Olivares added five.

In their second tournament game, the Matadors defeated Santa Ana, 70-62, led by 20 points each from Santiago and Waked. Dan Phan had eight and Vanhua Phan added six.

Bolsa Grande will open the Estancia Coast Classic on Dec. 26, at Estancia High against Kennedy High at 1:30 p.m.

The Garden Grove High boys basketball team stymied Century High in their Santa Ana/Garden Grove Classic opener, as they defeated the Centurions, 56-23, at Century High.

The Argonauts outscored Century, 20-4 in the first quarter and cruised to the victory after the fast start. Gabriel Ganac led the Argonauts with 12 points and Matt Lopez added 11. Fitu Lupematafila had eight points and Sebastian Castro added seven.

It was the 10th consecutive win for the Argonauts after starting the season 0-2. Prior to the start of the tournament, the Argonauts defeated Orange, 64-40, led by 17 points from Ganac and 10 from Lopez. Jordan Harris and Lupematafila each added eight.

The Rancho Alamitos girls’ basketball team rolled over Magnolia, 79-19, last week at Rancho Alamitos.

Gabrielle Carbajal led the Vaqueros with 24 points, while Patrice Jones and Liz Rodriguez each added 13. Emme Martinez and Michelle Thi each had six points. Rancho Alamitos opens Garden Grove League play at home against La Quinta on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
