Softball’s shining stars

 A high number of Garden Grove and Westminster prep softball players earned spots on 2013 all-league teams. The majority of these players hailed from the Garden Grove League, which featured only GG and Westminster squads. However, Garden Grove players won the highest honors in the Empire League, which featured powerhouse Pacifica High, which made a run to the semifinal round of the CIF playoffs this year.

However, Garden Grove players won the highest honors in the Empire League, which featured powerhouse Pacifica High, which made a run to the semifinal round of the CIF playoffs this year.

Indeed, Mariners ace Kaylee Carlson accepted the Empire League’s Pitcher of the Year award while eight of her teammates earned All-Empire League status. This list of First Team nominees included junior Nicole DeWitt as well as seniors Rebecca Lee, Ruby Rivera and Sydney Hart. Second Team selections included sophomores Faith Canfield, Katya Duvall, Nicole Wise, and junior Brooke Marquez.

Garden Grove High’s junior Jenavee Peres won Garden Grove League Player of the Year status while Los Amigos head coach John Wells received the Coach of the Year honor. The nominees for the All-Garden Grove League First Team included Ashley Sutter (Garden Grove), Celeste Villagrana (Garden Grove), Dani Deslauries (Garden Grove), Desiree Rascon (Garden Grove),  Krissy Brewer (La Quinta), Cami Hohneker (La Quinta), Paulynn Mao (Rancho Alamitos), Lily Waldo (Rancho Alamitos) Hannah Fogarty (Rancho Alamitos), Sierra Espinoza (Santiago), Arlene Martinez (Los Amigos), and Viviana Vizcarra (Los Amigos).

Second Team selections included Amy Dao (Bolsa Grande), Kaitlynn Williams (Garden Grove), Alyssa Fernandez (Garden Grove), Mahina Laguisan (Garden Grove), Domonique Romero (Garden Grove), Cathy Duong (La Quinta), Christine Miranda (La Quinta) Hannah Laban (Rancho Alamitos), Serena Zarate (Rancho Alamitos), Laura Enriquez (Santiago), Alondra Renteria (Santiago), and Alexis Fraser.

Westminster High’s sophomore Kristen Hong and Kaylee Graney Patterson both made the All-Golden West League First Team. Their teammates Sarah Avila and Kalynn Pham were chosen as nods for the Second Team.
