HONOR PAC’s president, Mario Ceballos, offered the following support for Bao:

"Bao Nguyen has demonstrated his commitment to advance progressive policies that create a more inclusive and promising society for LGBT, Latina/os, Asians and immigrant communities. As the first openly gay Vietnamese-American Mayor of a major city in our country, Bao knows that the growing political and economic impact of our diverse communities must result in greater opportunities for current and future generations to come. HONOR PAC is proud to endorse Bao for Congress."

Mayor Nguyen responded with thanks and a clear message that he’ll bring LGBT and immigration issues to the fore as a member of Congress:

"I’m hugely honored to receive the support of HONOR PAC, who do so much for LGBT immigrants in Orange County and beyond. When my parents escaped from Vietnam carrying me in their arms, they sacrificed home, community, and country so that I could live a free and better life. I’ll fight to honor my parents’ sacrifice in Congress. With HONOR PAC on my side, I know we’ll do great things for the LGBT immigrant community."

Born in a UN refugee camp, Bao and his parents immigrated to the United States to escape oppression in communist Vietnam. He grew up in the 46th district, attended Garden Grove public schools and graduated from Pacifica High School.

Bao was elected mayor of Garden Grove in 2014. Upon his swearing-in, he became the first directly- elected Vietnamese American Democratic mayor in the United States. He is the city’s first Vietnamese American and first openly LGBTQ mayor. Prior to his historic election, he served as a member of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education, where he expanded Spanish and Vietnamese language programs throughout the district.
