Since the beginning of the school year, Westminster School District – which serves students in Westminster, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach and Midway City – has provided more than 8,200 Chromebooks to students in second through eighth grade.

This month, the district is conducting its Middle School Chromebook Initiative at its three middle schools. Each student will receive a brand new Chromebook and case that they will be taking home each night. The goal of the 1:1 program is to support and enhance instruction and to promote collaboration, communication and creativity through 21st century teaching and learning.
Last week, middle school parents attended a presentation to learn about Westminster School District's Chromebook Initiative, parent and student expectations and responsibilities, as well as how to care for the new devices.
Jennifer Burks, executive director of educational technology, said that approximately 2,800 Chromebooks and cases will be distributed to middle school students this week.
Our new technology directly supports the implementation of Common Core and SBAC testing," Burks said.
In conjunction with the rollout, the Education Technology Department has conducted numerous trainings for staff and students on the Chromebooks, Google Apps for Education, Haiku and more. Through these new initiatives, teachers can find and share Common Core resources, as well as create blended learning experiences and environments for their students.
To support 21st century learning, the district has also authored detailed Common Core units of study for the benefit of both teachers and students. All of these innovations align with the district’s mission to prepare all students to be responsible, resilient, resourceful and productive world citizens in a changing and diverse society.
The Westminster School District serves approximately 10,000 students in grades K-8 at 17 schools.
