Thirty AVID seniors from Garden Grove Unified School District were awarded more than $1 million in college scholarships during the 2016 AVID Senior Standout Recognition & Scholarship Presentation hosted on April 20 by the Orange County Department of Education.
The event recognizes impressive senior standout students who are part of the AVID program at high schools across Orange County.
Thirty AVID seniors from Garden Grove Unified School District were awarded more than $1 million in college scholarships during the 2016 AVID Senior Standout Recognition & Scholarship Presentation hosted on April 20 by the Orange County Department of Education.
The event recognizes impressive senior standout students who are part of the AVID program at high schools across Orange County.
“This is always an inspiring event because you can see the tremendous impact the AVID program has on our young people in helping them overcome personal obstacles, prepare for the future, and achieve college goals,” said Teri Rocco, district Board of Education vice president. “Our district senior standout students are self-motivated and hard-working young people who are already making a difference in the world around them.”
Pacfica’s Michael Brito provided one of two student keynote speeches, delivering inspiring remarks about overcoming childhood bullying and the difference AVID made to help set him on the right path.
Senior standout students from the district are Christy Tran, Bolsa Grande High School; Jessica Pegueros, Garden Grove High School; Ana Monroy, La Quinta High School; Ernesto Ramirez, Los Amigos High School; Michael Brito, Pacifica High School; Juan Magana Uribe, Rancho Alamitos High School; and Odalis Espinoza-Echeverria, Santiago High School.
District students received more than $1 million in AVID-supported college scholarships from Orange County Dollars for Scholars funded by a Knott’s Berry Farm fundraiser, the Angels Baseball Foundation, Dad’s House Foundation, Hope International University and Kingston Technology.
During the event, OCDE representatives recognized Angels Baseball and the Angels Baseball Foundation for 10 years of participation in the AVID scholarship program, including the donation of Angels Scholarships to eighth grade students who remain in AVID through graduation from high school. Santiago High School graduate Jose Luis Guardado highlighted the significance that the Angels scholarship made in his life in helping him graduate from college.
The district also hosts a special event at the end of the school year to celebrate the success of its AVID seniors.
