Yes, only a few weeks remain before the start of the 2013-14 prep football season, and two teams from Garden Grove will begin the year in the top five of the CIF Southern Section Division IX polls.

Garden Grove High has been ranked No. 2 by the Maxpreps.com poll. It trails only Corona Del Mar, which knocked it out of the playoffs last year.

Additionally, Los Amigos has snagged the No. 5 spot.

Last year, Garden Grove High returned from a CIF championship season. It finished the season with an 11-3 overall record and 5-0 mark in league play. Los Amigos, which finished in second place in league at 4-1, ended with an 8-4 mark after Corona Del Mar knocked it from the second round.

Though the two teams are favored to battle for the league title, Rancho Alamitos, which finished in third place last year, owns the No. 17 ranking.

Garden Grove High will open the season with a contest against Golden West League Westminster, which owns the No. 11 spot in the standings. That contest will take place on Sept. 6 at Westminster, starting at 7 p.m. Last year, Garden Grove defeated Westminster in the opener with a 28-7 victory. Westminster would then go on to win the Golden West League title with a perfect 5-0 mark.

Los Amigos will open its season against Godinez, which it defeated in last year’s opener. That contest will take place Sept. 5 at Los Amigos at 7 p.m. Rancho Alamitos will take on Loara, which it did not play last year. That game will take place Aug. 30 at Rancho at 7 p.m.

The list of other season openers, for Garden Grove League teams, includes the following:

Aug. 29: Santiago vs. Godinez at 7 p.m.

Sept. 6: Bolsa Grande at Laguna Beach at 7 p.m.

Sept. 12: La Quinta vs. Calvalry Chapel  at 7 p.m.

Last year, La Quinta finished in fourth, Santiago took fifth and Bolsa Grande ended in the cellar of the Garden Grove League standings. The Garden Grove League will not commence until the second week of October. The most anticipated matchup, which will feature Garden Grove High against Los Amigos, has been scheduled for Oct. 24 at Garden Grove High.
