Despite the graduation of Antunez, the Argonauts could be better than they were last year. After winning the starting quarterback job, Ruben Mendoza developed a season-ending condition that required several surgeries and rehab.

Joseph Camarillo, who was among the team's running backs, took over the QB job. This year, Camarillo is likely to take over as the No. 1 running back. But the Argonauts have a lot of depth in the backfield and with a strong offensive line leading the way, Camarillo and Mendoza could have big seasons.

Fita Lupematisila will provide depth in the backfield, after rushing for 540 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Both he and Camarillo were All-League last year. First-team all-league senior wide receiver Adam Johnson will be a dangerous weapon on offense. Devin Rouse, who played primarily defense last year, will see more time at wide receiver this year.

The Argonauts' line will be anchored by returning All-League and All-CIF tackle Peslao Gauta. The 6-foot-4 junior is already getting interest from major universities. Alongside him will be returning starters, senior guard Xavier Mejia and senior tackle Darice Tavita.

On defense, Lupematisila will quarterback the defense from the middle linebacker spot. In the secondary, the Argonauts will be tough to beat with cornerbacks Mario Moemoe and Rouse. Moemoe had nine interceptions last year and is a dangerous punt and kick returner. Rouse had 46 tackles last year.

Senior strong safety T.J. Taufetee was second team all-league last year with 70 tackles and three interceptions.

The Argonauts kick off their season against Santa Ana Valley High at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 at home.
