Assemblywoman Sharon-Quirk Silva, along with consumer protection and law enforcement agencies, invited local residents to a Fraud Prevention Community Meeting to learn about the latest “Schemes, Scams and Rip-Offs” targeting local seniors and their families.

The free event took place on Sept. 19 at the La Palma Community Center.

“We all have heard from friends and family who have received strange calls or emails about owing money.  These frauds continue to get more elaborate each year. We have worked hard to bring together a diverse group of fraud prevention experts to inform and protect our constituents.  We sincerely hope that you, your family and your friends who joined us found this prevention seminar informative and helpful.  As a State Representative, it is my priority to serve and protect the people of the 65th Assembly District,” said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva, who represents Stanton.

State investigators and fraud prevention experts led a discussion on how to avoid, stop and prevent fraud.  Some of the topics covered included: identity theft, rental scams, real estate fraud, lawyer fraud, reverse mortgages, auto repair fraud, telemarketing scams and financial investment fraud.

Seniors, along with caregivers and their families were strongly encouraged to learn about the newest scams and tricks criminals are using to target them to further prevent fraud.  Local non-profit legal service organizations were on hand to talk with the public.
