The City of Stanton recently honored Nino Hernandez, a veteran of World War II.
He served from 1943 through 1971 through the U.S. Air Force and the U. S. Navy. Hernandez was celebrated and honored by Mayor Al Ethans for his service years in both branches of the military as well as his civic contributions at home.
Hernandez first served the military and his country on April 23, 1943 to Feb. 6, 1946 and was honorably discharged as Corporal in the 43rd Air Depot Squadron.

Hernandez first served the military and his country on April 23, 1943 to Feb. 6, 1946 and was honorably discharged as Corporal in the 43rd Air Depot Squadron.
He reenlisted in the U. S. Air Force Reserve on Feb. 7, 1946 to Feb. 6, 1949 and reenlisted in the U. S. Air Force Reserve and was honorably discharged as an Airman Second Class on Feb. 25, 1953.
On Sept. 7, 1967, Hernandez reenlisted in the U. S. Navy Reserve as a “Seabee” and was honorably discharged on Sept. 6, 1971.
Hernandez earned the following decorations and citations during his military career: Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal; Meritorious Unit Award; Victory Ribbon; Four Overseas Service Bars.
He received a Certificate of Appreciation for War Service from the Army Air Forces Commanding General thanking him for his service and dedication.
He received a letter from President Harry Truman thanking him for his service.
He continued to support his fellow veterans through charitable donations to the Help Hospitalized Veterans Organization and was recognized by this organization in 2003 as Donor of the Year and in 2005 as Good Samaritan of the Year.
