Pacifica High girls beat La Quinta

By TED APODACA: The Pacifica High girls basketball team won a defensive second-quarter battle that proved to be the difference in a 42-35 win over La Quinta High last week at Pacifica High.

The Mariners used a 7-1 second quarter run to take a 16-10 lead into halftime that they made stand up for the nonleague victory. Both offenses adjusted in the second half, with the Aztecs outscoring the Mariners, 26-25.

The Mariners used a 7-1 second quarter run to take a 16-10 lead into halftime that they made stand up for the nonleague victory. Both offenses adjusted in the second half, with the Aztecs outscoring the Mariners, 26-25.

La Quinta sophomore forward Taryn Nadeau had a game-high 16 points and Nikki Nguyen added 10 for the Aztecs. The Mariners had scoring from eight different players, led by senior guard Binhan Doanvo with nine. Junior guard Kylie Beall added eight points for the Mariners. Charity Masuno had seven points and Roxie Aquino and Hannah Tran tallied six each.

The Mariners have won two of their past three games, including a win over Empire League foe Valencia on Dec. 18. The Mariners have two more non-league games before starting Empire League play. They play at Katella High on Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. and at Rancho Alamitos on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m.

The Aztecs are at the Ontario Tournament This week (Dec. 28-30), before hosting Magnolia High on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. They will host Torrance High on Jan. 9 at 3 p.m.

They open Garden Grove League play at Rancho Alamitos on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.

The Bolsa Grande High boys basketball improved to 8-1 on the season with a 54-51 win over Whitney last week at Bolsa Grande High.

Sebastian Waked had another big game as he led the Matadors with 19 points. Noah Santiago added 17 points for the Matadors, who outscored Whitney 14-8 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

The Matadors are competing in the Estancia Coast Classic this week and will host Oxford Academy on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. The Matadors begin Garden Grove League play on Jan. 13 at home against Los Amigos.

The Garden Grove High boys basketball team had started the season at 11-1, but have stumbled as of late, losing three of their last four games.

But the defending Garden Grove League champs should again be the team to beat when they open league play on Jan. 13 at home against Santiago.

Matt Lopez had 26 points to lead the Argonauts to a 58-55 win over Saddleback last week. Gabriel Ganac added 14 points for the Argonauts and Justin Lovato added nine.

In their next game, the Argonauts got off to a slow start and eventually fell to Santa Ana, 75-58. The Argonauts had 14 points from Ganac and 11 from Lopez, but they could not slow down the Santa Ana Duo of Antonio Nario and Adrian Cruz ,who combined for 49 points.

Garden Grove will play at Pacifica on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.

The Westminster High boys basketball team won two games last week to break its losing streak and regain some momentum.

The Lions defeated Dana Hills, 80-68, led by a game-high 34 points from Buddy Alton. Gian Carlos Correa had 17 points and Tylor Pham added 14. Prior to that game the Lions defeated San Juan Hills, 56-48.

The Lions are at the Estancia Coast Classic this week, and will open Golden West League play on Jan. 8, at Loara at 7 p.m.
