The Garden Grove High football team already faced Katella once this year, but this time it really mattered, considering the two clashed in the second round of the CIF Southern Division playoffs on Friday, Nov. 22 at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.
Once again, Garden Grove prevailed and remained unbeaten with an impressive performance on both sides of the ball. As a result, it delivered a 49-0 victory to advance to the next round.

The Garden Grove High football team already faced Katella once this year, but this time it really mattered, considering the two clashed in the second round of the CIF Southern Division playoffs on Friday, Nov. 22 at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.
Once again, Garden Grove prevailed and remained unbeaten with an impressive performance on both sides of the ball. As a result, it delivered a 49-0 victory to advance to the next round.
The Argonauts (12-0) took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Sionne Masoe, who ran for 81 yards, drew first blood with a 10-yard touchdown. Quarterback Angel Martinez, who completed 9 of 16 passes for 89 yards, then connected with Allejandro Ceja for a 19-yard scoring pass.
The Argonauts notched 35 points in the second quarter. Martinez landed the first blow, tossing a 9-yard scoring pass. He then scrambled into the paint with a 47-yard run. Unfinished, M asoe dashed into the paint for a 17-yard score.
The Garden Grove League champs then decided to put up some numbers on defense – at least linebacker Reilly Hoalton did. He intercepted a pass and returned it for a 43-yard score. He would end with a pair of picks.
Last but not least, Masoe, who tallied three touchdowns, returned a punt for a 58-yard touchdown.
Neither side scored in the fourth quarter.
Katella’s quarterback Ben Cobb was held to just 9 yards of passing. The Argonauts defense once again stopped the opposition’s running attack, as well, holding rusher TJ Ashmeade to 42 yards on 14 carries.
Katella finished the season with an 8-4 overall record and landed in third in the Orange League standings.
Garden Grove will now face Irvine in the semifinal round, which unfolds on Nov. 29 at a neutral location.
