More than 400 students with disabilities participated in the 45th annual Garden Grove Unified School District Special Games on June 6.

To kick off the event, graduating special education students ran a ceremonial lap with a torch. This year’s theme was sports and activities included relay races, sprints, tee-ball swing, basketball, volleyball, goal kicks and football throw.

The games included participants from Bolsa Grande, La Quinta, Pacifica, and Rancho Alamitos high schools; Cook, Gilbert, Heritage, Lawrence, Parkview, Patton, and Post elementary schools; Bell, Irvine, and Ralston intermediate schools; and the Jordan Secondary Learning/Adult Transition program.

School administrators, teachers, and personnel from the district’s Office of Special Education Services served as officials with the assistance of the ASB students from all Garden Grove Unified School District high schools — Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove, Hare, La Quinta, Los Amigos, Pacifica, Rancho Alamitos, and Santiago.

The event was hosted by the Adapted Physical Education Department and the Office of Special Education. Special education is a program designed to meet the unique educational needs of children with disabilities who meet the eligibility criteria under the law.

Special education services can begin at three years old and continue for a child until the age of 22.

More information about the special education services offered at the Garden Grove school district can be found under the “Departments” tab at www.ggusd.us.
