Cub Scout Pack No. 271 hosted the 16th annual Cub Scout Push Derby.
For local Scouts, it was all about conquering the hill.
“The Scouts win as a team,” said Jennifer Tackney, of Team Tackney Real Estate in Garden Grove, which headed up the event (husband Geoffrey is the other half of Team Tackney). “And they get to meet new people and it’s a positive experience toward building character. Thank you Scouts for your bravery.”

Cub Scout Pack No. 271 hosted the 16th annual Cub Scout Push Derby.
For local Scouts, it was all about conquering the hill.

Scouts 5- to 10-years-old competed in races.
In each race — and there were many — one Scout drove and one Scout pushed. Each car is built by the Scouts, with the help of their parents. The cars, made of wood and metal, have hand brakes. There was even a pit stop for quick car repairs.
The race course was lined with bales of hay, to protect the drivers and spectators. The day climaxed with championship races.
On hand to feed the crew of racers and family members were three food trucks with an assortment of hot dogs, hamburgers, shaved ice and fresh-squeezed lemonade.
There was a silent auction and lots of raffle prizes to go around, all donated by local merchants. Some of the prizes were tickets to the Orange County Fair, In-N-Out Burger, a Clipper’s basketball game, Golf N’ Stuff and Tommy’s Burgers.
Derby racers were from Garden Grove, Anaheim, Fullerton and Cypress.
To fund the derby, Scouts pay a registration fee and there were donations from local organizations such as the Garden Grove Fire Department.
Awards were given in several categories including the Councilman Award, Scout Theme, Mayor’s Choice Award, Fireman’s Award and Policeman’s Award.
On hand for the event was Mayor Steve Jones and Council members Kris Beard and Stephanie Klopfenstein. The flag presentation was led by the Garden Grove Police Department.
