It's official: the theme of the 56th annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival is “Honoring Our Exceptional Educators.”

And the Grand Marshal will be Dr. George West, president of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

As part of the four-day Memorial Day weekend event – to be held May 23 through 26 — the festival is holding a Favorite Teacher Contest.

Students in the Garden Grove Unified School District can nominate their favorite teacher on the festival website – www.strawberryfestival.org – or through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Strawberry Festival board members will review the entries and select teachers based on their merits as described by their student.

In addition to teachers, students may also nominate a counselor, nurse, psychologist, bus driver, secretary, custodian or other district employee.  The contest runs through May 12.

Winning teachers will be honored by on-air personality Tina Mastramico from radio station KSWB The Sound LA at the VIP breakfast Saturday May 24 at 8 a.m. at the Garden Grove Community Center.

Students whose teacher has been selected will receive two wristbands for a full day of free carnival rides.

“We would like to celebrate exceptional teachers selected by the most discriminating of judges, the students they teach,” says board president Gerry Newkirk. ”Winners will be contacted on May13.”

The festival will be held Memorial Day Weekend, Friday, May 23 through Monday, May 26. Friday hours are 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday is from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Admission is free. Special one-price ride-all-day wristbands will be offered for all festival days at $25 per wristband on Friday and $30 each on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Tickets for individual rides can also be purchased separately at $1 per ticket.

The four-day event, which is the second largest city festival in the Western United States, will be held at the Village Green between Main Street and Euclid Avenue in downtown Garden Grove.

Last year’s attendance was more than 300,000.  Highlights include the Friday evening official giant strawberry cake-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Showmobile (Acacia and Main streets) when free cake is served to more than 2,000 people.
