On April 26, 28 Garden Grove residents were recognized at the fourth annual Garden Grove College Graduates’ Reception, hosted by Mayor Bao Nguyen and the Garden Grove City Council.
The event was held at the Garden Grove Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.
Garden Grove Fire Chief Tom Schultz, who recently obtained his masters degree in Public Administration, spoke about the importance of receiving a college education and the opportunities that present themselves after graduation.
“Receiving a higher-education degree prepares you for a career and provides the specific skill sets, knowledge and training to get out there and find a job. Without these skills it’s challenging to find a job in certain professions,” said Chief Schultz.
The event was also an opportunity for the graduates to network with local professionals in their related field, as well as representatives from the City’s Human Resources Department and the State of California’s Employment Development Department.
Each graduate was entered into an opportunity drawing for a chance to win an Apple iPad, and a $500, and (2) $250 cash prizes. Sponsors for the event were Signal Hill Petroleum, Credit Union of Southern California, Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Orange County, Garden Grove Elks Lodge, Volkswagen of Garden Grove and the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival Association.
After the reception, the graduates were given a Community Spotlight during the Garden Grove City Council meeting.
