The Garden Grove Unified Board of Education has approved Theresa (Teri) Rocco to fill the vacancy left when Bao Nguyen was elected Mayor of Garden Grove in December.

Rocco worked for the district for 42 years before retiring in 2014.

George West, president of the board, said, “Throughout Ms. Rocco’s tenure she was always committed to putting students first and helped empower parents to be advocates for their child’s education.  We are very happy that she is joining our board.”

Rocco worked for 12 years as an instructional aide and school community liaison; was a first grade bilingual teacher, district bilingual mentor teacher and a parent educator for 19 years; and retired after nearly 10 years as the supervisor of Parent and Community Outreach.

During her time in the Parent and Community Outreach Department, Rocco built strong relationships with the district's diverse community of parents and more than 40 educational partners. She was also a key part in creating the district’s new vision and mission statements and its first ever districtwide strategic plan.

Her intimate knowledge of the Local Control Funding Formula and Local Control Accountability Plan gives her a unique insight that will benefit the community and the district.

After being sworn in by Garden Grove Police Department Sgt. John Reynolds and district Superintendent Gabriela Mafi, Rocco addressed the board and the audience, “I assure you that I do not take this responsibility lightly. Thank you all so much for the opportunity to continue to live my passion!”

Pursuant to Education Code 5091, unless a petition calling for a special election is filed in the office of the county superintendent within 30 days of the appointment, this appointment shall be effective until the 2016 election.
