BY ANGELA HATCHER: “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”is coming to The Gem Theater and this murderous musical may be one of the tastiest treats ever to grace its stage.

Presented by One More Productions, “Sweeney Todd” will run from Sept. 29through Oct. 13 – just in time for a little pre-Halloween “fright night” celebrating.

As one of Southern California’s leading musical theater companies, OMP’s Co-owner and Artistic Director Damien Lorton says, “This is the biggest budget for any production that we have ever had, and we are going all out for ‘Sweeney Todd.’ On top of our $100,000 budget for lighting design, we have added an additional $100,000 – and that’s just for lights! Designed by our award-winning set designer, we will be featuring an unbelievable two-story revolving set that literally extends over the audience. The sound design includes new body mics that will bring out the vocals of the magnificent singers in our cast… Can you tell how excited I am about this production? We already have our nine-piece live orchestra in place as well, and I can’t wait to share this special 1979 thriller with our audience.”

This dark, bloody, and deliciously funny Tony award-winning melodrama tells the tale of an ordinary barber in the Victorian era who was wrongfully sentenced to life in prison by a corrupt judge.

The barber returns with vengeance in his heart, and his new life becomes anything but ordinary. Once he partners up with Mrs. Lovett and her struggling pie shop, the successful pair make a killing!

Sondheim’s stunning musical score has been called Sondheim’s “most perfect score,” and this soaring musical is one of the best “to die for” theatrical moments ever presented on stage.
