The 11th annual Azteca Halloween costume party last Friday at Azteca Restaurant on Historic Main Street had an abundance of costumed-guests with an array of imaginative ideas last Friday.

Costumes were judged by those in attendance, with applause being the deciding factor, along with participants taking part in the Friday-night Karaoke.

"This is my seventh year dressing up in costume at Azteca," said "Best Costume" winner Jenny Somera from Stanton, who was dressed as Tapatio Hot Sauce – an everyday staple since 1971.

Two Garden Grove residents were also in the running for best costume; they were Ken Margo as a Piñata and Dixie Rebelle as Freddy Krueger, with his (her) four-bladed glove from the movie, "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Other costume categories included: Sexiest Costume, Funniest Costume and Best Couple Costume.

For "Sexiest," although there were many beautiful ladies in an assortment of alluring and lovely disguises, the crowd ended up voting for "Maxine" as sexiest, who was actually a 6-foot-3 gentleman named Max, arriving wearing an adorable Lycra mini-dress, fishnet stockings and his borrowed best costume jewelry.

"Max is a wonderful singer. It was fun to hear his deep voice delivering a Pink Floyd song," said Owner Jennifer Stewart. "Max is an example of the lighthearted spirit in all of us who still love Halloween."

In the "Best Couple" category, the voting for two sets of finalists was so close that judges Bobby Vegas and Stewart couldn't decide, so Stewart said they decided to call it a tie and awarded both couples "Two complementary dinner certificates."

"I mean, how does one draw a comparison between 'Freddy versus Jason' as one couple, versus 'Pinata man and Birthday Cake Girl?'" Stewart laughed.

The party lasted until 1 a.m. "With a munchies menu of fresh, hot food for the late-night cravings of the Halloween haunters," said Stewart.
